I helped a friend from the Service League serve at the Adult Social Club today. The club is a group of older people in our town who get together once a month, bring a covered dish and talk, eat, play cards or dominoes, etc. The Service League provides their meeting place and organizes the covered dishes in a buffet line. It was a lot of fun. The Service League volunteers are invited to enjoy the buffet and someone brought the best grape salad I've ever tasted! It was sweet enough to be served as a dessert. When I asked for the recipe the lady who made it was kind enough to write it down for me.

I was digging around in my garage last night ("digging" being sadly realistic) and I came across an old book I'd forgotten I even had. It's called The Tolkien Scrapbook and was printed in 1978. It's got essays, fanfic (!) and .... recipes in a section called "The Middle-earth Gourmet" by Maureen Bayha and Alida Becker! I have to say that the honey cake one sounds very intriguing. Here they are:

Frodo's Scones )

Bilbo's Orange Marmelade )

Smaug's Gems )

Fruit Fool a la Sackville-Baggins )

Merry's Mulled Cider )

Mrs. Maggot's Cottage Pie )

Mushroom Soup from the Inn at Bree )

Mirkwood Cookies )

Beorn's Honey Nut Cake )

Scotch Eggs Strider )

Baked Bluefish for Gollum )

"tis the season....plum season, that is!!!

I make a lot of curries and really do not like the "bought" chutneys and have a tried and true that I make whenever plum season is here...guess what.....IT'S HERE!!!! Actually we planted a plum tree many years ago exactly for this purpose. I must admit, I supplement with bought plums, which this year have been great

In the series Share-your-national-food-recepies, we now come to Norway and I´ll be sharing several traditional recepies with you. First a dinner course, then a national dessert and then a cake that also is used as dessert.

One of the recepies does also have something to do with lembas... :) )
