Shire Kitchen Recipe Fic Challenge

The LJ Community [livejournal.com profile] shire_kitchen would like to announce its second annual Recipe Fic Challenge. This is a chance to find a creative way to share your very favorite dishes as well as have the fun of writing a story! This years challenge will have a theme: Spring!

Shire Kitchen Recipe Fic Challenge

1. A recipe fic is defined as a story in which a specific food is mentioned, and the recipe for making it is given.

2. Recipes should be given in such a way that the reader could use it to make the dish described. The recipe may be incorporated in the body of the story (but all ingredients and steps must be specified) or the complete recipe may be added at the end of the story. (If the recipe is at the end, it is not considered part of the “length” of the story.)

3. Stories should be 2,000 words or less, not including the recipe.

4. Recipes should be something the authors have tried and know to be good.

5. Characters and settings: Any characters and settings from the published fiction of J.R.R. Tolkien.

8. Genre: Any genre

9. Ratings: G to R, no NC-17, please, and clearly label *all* warnings.

10. Deadline: Challenge will begin on Wednesday, Feb. 1, Deadline for submissions on Monday, March 13. Stories will be posted on Monday, March 20.

12. Anyone may enter. Send entries or inquiries to either aelfwina at cableone dot net (please paste submission into the body of the email) or sandy80461 at aol dot com with “Shire Kitchen Recipe Fics” in the subject line. Edit: We've made a minor change to the challenge. Everyone is encouraged to post their own story directly to the community. Just be sure to put your story behind a cut so we don't overwhelm everyone's friends pages. And don't forget to tag your story -- Spring2006.

13. Previously published stories are eligible if they fit all the other criteria, and were not previously published in last year's challenge.

I'm on it! I'll put it in tomorrow's edition. And maybe once on the first of February and a couple more times after that, just for reminders.

I have read that people are now encouraged to post their tales directly into the community. I have just finished a tale that would fit perfectly; do I have to wait until March 20 (and if so, am I allowed to post it earlier in my LJ?) It was meant to encourage a friend and I don't want her have to wait.

WooHoo!

I say go for it! :D I'm looking forward to reading!

Again, I could post it earlier in my LJ (without the recipe), which works with the rules IMO. Then you could get the version with the recipe and put it online on March 20.

It has just reached my beta. You will get it as soon as she has smoothed out my flaws. *smiles*

Question.

How does the theme have to be incorporated? Must the recipe be specifically spring-themed, or do we just have to theme spring into the story some way?

(I'm considering this. Still not certain.)

OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOH.

So it's all right if my characters are just wishing for Spring? Talking about it?

B/c my bunny is being a stubborn Winter bunny, but for some reason he's fine with them talking about his warmer cousin. . .and it fits perfectly with the way the story is coming together in my head. . . .

Well, that's for one. I actually have two bunnies hopping around up here. . . .

*dies*

Couple of questions. So, if I'm plannning on posting my story directly to the community, I need to wait for the 20th? And if I do plan to post my own story directly, do I still need to submit it via email by the 13th?

[identity profile] febobe.livejournal.com 2006-03-11 06:46 pm (UTC)(link)
So, let me get this straight. . .

*We can go ahead and post our stories whenever we're done?

*"Official" deadline is March 20th, but late entries are still welcome?

Just wanting to be sure I get things straight -

One down, one to go,

I have something written, but unfortunately it refused to stay under 2000 words but came in at about 3500. Is there any chance I could still post it, or should I hold onto it for maybe a future challenge?
