I would advice you not to leave out the onions, because it is my experience that it just doesn't taste so good. (But maybe it's different from person to person).

My brother absolutely despises onions, but loves carrot hodge-podge. He asked my mother ones to prepare it without the onions, but he didn't like it at all without them. (If my mother chopped up the onions really small, my brother didn't seem to mind them).

But maybe your family likes it without onions. It's probably just a matter of trial and error
