Yum - and Yep! My mum always soaked the cake in brandy, lots of it. Don't drive after eating! She used a kebab stick to poke holes in the cake so the brandy penetrated right to the middle. Just before Christmas the cake got a covering of apricot jam, marzipan and thick royal icing. I used to have fun putting a snow scene on the top, complete with snowman and Santa!
