I've decided to make poppy seed bread as an end-of-year gift for Miranda's teachers. It just seems like such a friendly recipe to me. And, who knows, maybe this is what the hobbits are talking about when they refer to seedcake. :)

POPPYSEED BREAD

3 cups flour
1 1/2 tsp. baking powder
1 1/2 tsp. salt
2 1/2 cups sugar
1 1/2 tbl. poppyseed
1 1/8 cups oil
3 eggs
1 1/2 cups milk
1 1/2 tsp. vanilla
1 1/2 tsp. butter flavor
1 1/2 tsp. almond flavor
Glaze:
1/2 cup sugar
1/4 cup orange juice
1/2 tsp. vanilla
1/2 tsp. butter flavor
1/2 tsp. almond flavor

Mix dry ingredients. Add wet ingredients and mix well. Pour into greased and floured loaf pans or bundt pan. Bake at 350 degrees for 1 hour or until crack in top is dry. Brush glaze over warm loaves. Makes 3 small loaves or 1 bundt pan.

I always thought about "linseed" when reading about seed cake :)

I like to bake my own bread, and this one looks very nice. I don't know where I can buy poppyseed, though. Have to look around a bit.

I have two questions:
1) I never heard about butter flavor. Is that just butter? or can it be substituted by butter?

Can this bread be made in a bread-maker?

batter in a bread-maker would make a big mess :)

I just went to the supermarket and they don't have butter flavour and no poppy seeds :(

I probably could find the poppy seeds in a health food shop but I don't think I can find the butter flavour (could it be left out, or would that change the batter too much?)

Thanks for helping me!

Next time I'm in the nearby city I will try to find poppy seeds. Otherwise I can always try and bake the bread without the seeds.

I rarely bake cakes but since this might be very hobbity, I´ll give it a try. When you say vanilla, do you mean vanilla sugar or vanilla stalks/powder?

Thanks. I´ve another question though. Our ovens only goes up to 250 degrees Celsius. You said we should use 350 degrees, I suppose that is Farenheit? Or do you use other degrees for ovens?
